'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Interview With Histon Fans

Vital Swindon Town ask Histon Fans over on their message board Glassworld Gab a few questions before our FA Cup Round One match at the Glassworld Stadium on Saturday.

Thank You To All The Histon Fans Who Took Part!

1. How long have you supported Histon?

Think it's about 4 years now. Originally a Sunderland supporter but it's a long time since I've lived up there. When I moved to Cambridgeshire for work in 2003 I went along to both Cambridge United and Histon because of a desire to watch and support local football. Not taking anything away from United, I enjoyed the visit to Histon immensely and immediately got hooked.

2. Who should Swindon Town fans look out for?

Ha - and what if your scouts are reading? ;) We have several capable and committed players. Let's discuss over a beer after the match and see if we agree on MotM.

3. What are your expectations for the current season?

I hoped that we could push for a final position in the play-offs. The progress over the last few seasons has been fantastic.

4. What do you know about Swindon Town?

They walloped my team Sunderland in the 1989/90 play-off final on a roasting hot day at Wembley. Tony Norman, our goalie, kept the score down to 1-0. With much crying from the mags up the road (who Sunderland had trounced in the play-off semi final) Sunderland were promoted to the top league when Swindon were kicked out because of Lou Macari's finanical dealings.

5. What is your biggest FA Cup memory?

On the day I was born Sunderland won the FA Cup.

6.What is your biggest Histon F.C. memory?

Winning the Conference South Championship and it all got a bit messy that evening.

7. What are your predictions for Saturday's Match?

To be honest I think Swindon will probably win but I expect Histon to put up a big fight and I'd be delighted if we can progress through to the next round.

1. How long have you supported Histon?

I moved to Histon from Yate in 1996 due to work. I'm really an exciled Bristol City fan but can't afford to travel to the Gate very often. I bought a house a couple of mins walk from Histon's ground and to get my footie fix I wandered across to a home game back when they were in the Eastern Counties league. It was quite interesting but I didn't go over very often back then. Steve Fallon took charge in 1999 and started drinking in my local (the railway Vue - well worth a visit on Saturday by the way as its the closest boozer to the ground). I got to know him quite well and I started going to more and more games and have now been a season ticket holder for the last three years. He has had phenominal success getting promotions to the Southern League (Eastern Div), Southern League Prem, Conference South and finally the Conference (or Blue Square Premier League as it is now known)

2. Who should Swindon Town fans look out for?

The player of the Month for October in the Conference was Lanre Oyebanjo, our young eighteen year old right back who we signed from Brentford just before the transfer deadline. Any one of Patrick Ada (Centre Half), Josh Simpson (Midfield) or Jack Midson (Striker) could easily have won the award as well.

3. What are your expectations for the current season?

Well I know that Steve Fallon would consider this season a failure if he doesn't get a play off spot at the minimum this season. I personally think that if we keep going the way we have been playing the last 4 or 5 games we'll be in with a chance of the title.

4. What do you know about Swindon Town?

Lots being a BCFC fan. I used to look forward to the games against you guys both at the Gate and the County ground. I've never quite understood why you lot have such a loathing for Oxford though - I would have thought BCFC would be a bigger rival than a tinpot outfit like them :p

5. What is your biggest FA Cup memory?

I guess you mean watching Histon? Beating Shrewsbury at home 2-0 in 2004 then losing at home to Yeovil 1-3 - cracking game

6. What is your biggest Histon F.C. memory?

Bloody hell - so many - all those promotions. The FA cup run mentioned above and the one in 2006 when if we'd beaten Nuneaton in the replay then we'd have been playing Middlesborough. Beating Oxford (ha ha bet you enjoyed that too) in our TV debut last season. But I think the best has to be beating Cambridge United 5-0 in the FA Trophy season before last when they were in the Conference and we were in the Conference South - not just beat our nearest rivals (by distance) but completely humiliated them.

7. What are your predictions for Saturday's Match?

If we play like we have been in the league then you'll be in for a very long hard afternoon, but we have this horrible habit of bottling it in the FA cup against bigger teams - lost 3-0 at Notts County last year and they were near the bottom of league 2 and played absolute garbage - we were worse!!
