Team GB Given the Go-Ahead

Team GB Given the Go-Ahead

Team GB has been given the go ahead to select a football team for the 2012 London Olympic Games it has been announced.

Fans from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have all shown much displeasure in the idea of a Team GB FC because it would strip each nation of their identity.

So basically, what has been confirmed is that Team GB FC will consist of English only players with the Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish football associations turning a blind eye to the project.

One questions whether the English FA have thought about this fully:

1. London 2012 (27 July to 12 August) takes place just weeks after the 2012 European Championships in Poland and Ukraine concludes (9 June - 1 July).

If England manage to qualify for this then who will they select for the Olympics?

2. The Football League usually begins in early August - so if the English FA wanted to select any players form the 3 tiers within the Football League then this would no doubt result in fierce opposition from managers of clubs.

These are just two reasons how this project could effect the domestic game. Is there any need for this?

Could the English FA conclude in sending a U-19's team? Or even a British Universities squad?

What are your thoughts?

As you can probably tell, I'm no fan of a Team GB FC. It's a pointless venture merely because all levels of football have adequate competitions that rank far superior to the Olympic games. Football, to me, doesn't belong there.
