Leicester City are reported to have abandoned their interest in Swindon Town striker Simon Cox.
It is unlikely that the prolific forward will remain in Wiltshire beyond July but it would appear that he will not be heading to Leicester.
The Swindon Evening Advertiser has even suggested that Leicester officials have been disappointed by Cox's lack of interest towards joining the Foxes. This probably proves Cox's intention to remain living in the Reading area.
Obviously the Swindon Town asking price is a major stumbling block for a lot of clubs - thought to be around £2.5 million. This has been subject to much bemoaning from fans of the clubs that want Cox but Town are not in a position where the club have to sell. This is a great break from the norm but one must ask that for this to be a wise move surely Town must convince Cox to sign a 1-year contract extention so Town can
1) Secure one final season
2) Not lose him on a free next summer
In 2004 Sam Parkin signed a similar deal before eventually leaving for Ipswich Town a year later.
Leeds United were very briefly linked but Fitton is not keen to sell to a rival League One club. Celtic's ended when Gordon Strachan resigned while West Brom's did when Mowbray left for Parkhead. Mowbray has thus far not renewed his interest in Cox, instead concentrating on former Baggies loanee Marc-Antoine Fortune. Fulham, QPR and Newcastle were early interested parties according to the national press while Bristol City were also recently tenously linked by the Bristol Evening Post.
The fact of the matter is that it appears Cox will remain a Town player until a Preimership or London based club comes in for him (with a bid that adhere to the asking price).
