Fitton Talks on Stadium Future
In an interview with the Evening Advertiser Swindon Town chairman Andrew Fitton has stated that his board will submit a plan to the Swindon Borough Council in regards to stadium redevelopment of the County Ground by March 2010.
Fitton has reiterated the clubs desire to remain at the County Ground start much to the pleasure of Town fans who are, on the whole, keen to stay in the centre of Town and not move into a flatpack stadium beside the motorway... or heaven forbid Chippenham!!!
The chairman has also suggested that he is not keen to knock the whole stadium down and spend a season in Bristol or elsewhere, the club plan to keep the Don Rogers Stand and redevelope the other three stands one-by-one. Fitton stated that the County Ground lends itself very well to a phased development, which we could do over a period of between two-and-a-half and three years by taking the ground down in sections and rebuilding it... It`s what they did at Newcastle, West Ham and a few other places, and that`s what I expect might happen.'
The club have been talking to developers who had been involved in the projects at Swansea City and Cardiff City along with those who are currently working alongside Bristol City for their new stadium project.
Andrew Fitton concluded by talking about dates of development and completion by saying that the 'way we think it could be done it could take a couple of years to be built, so we are looking at a target of around 2013."
