Austin Misses Out on Monthly Accolade

On December 5th Huddersfield Town player Robbie Williams picked up the League One Player of the Month award for November. Good for him.

The following month saw a young centre forward average a goal a game. Two against Orient and one against Brighton, Charlton and Yeovil.

One would expect those in the know to acknowledge that this rookie forward was until October playing for Poole Town in the Wessex League Premier Division. Alas, they didn't.

In the league, even the almighty Jermaine Beckford has less goals post-November announcement (and he got nominated). Austin's form has been just as important for Town.

Deon Burton was nominated... he also scored less goals and was even sent-off during the month! Southampton's Rickie Lambert and Wes Hoolahan were the other nominees.

Wait, the nominees came from Leeds United, Norwich City, Charlton Athletic and Southampton. Hmmm.

I believe in credit where it is due and I do not doubt that Beckford, Burton, Lambert and Hoolahan have all had a good month but to not acknowledge Austin was a bit harsh considering the common criteria has always appeared to either scoring goals or at a push being a classy midfielder!

Rant Over.

Who chooses these nominations I wonder. If anyone Hoolahan stands out to me aside from our Charlie that is.

Yeah, I didn't rant at the Hoolahan decision. But that list stinks of laziness. I often feel sorry for the goalkeepers and defenders who are consistant but don't get the acclaim they perhaps deserve.

Non-interesting fact - In the top flight, out of the 143 months that the Player of the Month has been awared (since 1993) - only 6 have been given to a goalkeeper and only 10 to a defender!!!
