Prutton: Buddy Benefit?

Prutton: Buddy Benefit?

Swindon Town reportedly on the verge signing former England Under-21 international David Prutton on a Free Transfer.

At the end of the season the ex-Leeds United midfelder was expected to Prolong his stay at Colchester United where he finished the 2009/10 season after joining on a free from Leeds United.

Aidy Boothroyd offered Prutton terms but he soon departed for Coventry City, this resulted in Colchester suspending all contract offers until a new manager was appointed.

New U's boss John Ward was quick to declare his desire in keeping Prutton but the midfielder wasn't convinced and Ward has since stated that he expects him to go elsewhere.

Gus Poyet's Brighton and Hove Albion were strongly linked to Prutton, some sources suggesting that a deal was close to be completed while the Swindon Advertiser have also stated that Sheffield Wednesday are also interested.

So how can Swindon Town beat a big club like Sheffield Wednesday or a financially better off but equally ambitious outfit like Brighton?

Well it appears to be purely down to friendship! The indications are that David Prutton is good friends with former Leeds United teammates David Lucas and Jonathan Douglas. Apparently this is something clubs simply cannot compete with (money aside!).

Danny Wilson is a big admirer of Prutton but one would question as to how possible such a transfer would be for Swindon if it was for a

ittle help with some friends? Wilson has a good reputation of selling a club to a player. Ritchie Jones to Hartlepool United when 'bigger' clubs were said to be interested is a good example.

David Lucas was also said to have played a significant factor in the transfer of Jonanthan Douglas last summer. The Irishman was linked to clubs in the Championship.
