Frédéric Darras (1966-2010)

It is with great sadness to learn that former Swindon Town defender Frédéric Darras has died after suffering a heart attack in his native France on October 27, 2010.

Darras started his career as a junior with Guines before joining the youth ranks at AJ Auxerre where he became a firm crowd favourite during his five years.

Moves to FC Sochaux and SC Bastia followed before he made his move to England.

Darras was signed by Steve McMahon in August 1996 as Swindon embarked on their return to the second tier.

His first season saw him feature as a regular making 39 appearances in all competitions as Town avoided the drop.

The French defenders second and final season began as a regular but as Town struggled Darras found himself out-of-favour, short of fitness and didn't make an appearance after Christmas. He played 55 times for Swindon in all.

Physio Dick Mackay has described Darras as 'consummate professional' and that 'he got on with the game and accepted the English style of play.'

There will be a minute's applause before the Charlton Athletic fixture on November 2.

Rest in Peace Freddy.
