It's been a funny year at Swindon Town F.C.
As 2011 begins Swindon Town enjoyed a rare feeling of football ecstacy before the horrible crash of 'what-ifs'.
The new year doesn't appear to promise much for the Swindon Town fan. The 2010/11 has been one of disappointments and false starts as Town struggle to emulate the previous season.
The tail end of the 2009/10 campaign was one of the best I can remember.
THE HIGHS
CHARLIE AUSTIN
A relevation! Poole Town fans can tell you that they expected Austin to do well at Swindon Town but NOBODY could have anticipated this sort of form.
Danny Ward
So often do Swindon Town bring in highly rated young players from the leagues above with promises of great things and so often these promises result in disappointment.
However, Danny Ward was superb! Danny Wilson brought him in and he struggled to get a game originally but when he took his chance... He didn't half it!
Swindon Town 3-0 Leeds United (TWICE)
Possibly the most satisfying double we've done in while. Not ject because it was 'mighty' Leeds but I tend to think that we bottle it against the bigger teams that find themselves in the third tier. To go to Elland Road and humiliate them was a great achievement.
Southampton 0-1 Swindon Town
For much the same reasons really. We enjoyed playing the Saints in 2010 winning three out of three.
However, this victory at St. Mary's in March thanks to a composed Charlie Austin effort shut Alan Pardew up. Earlier he had told the press that Swindon would treat a draw like a win.
Charlton Athletic in the Play-Offs
These two fixtures brought back memories of better times following Swindon Town.
A fantastic atmosphere at the County Ground resulting in a great 2-1 victory which could have been more.
However, Charlton bombard Town in the 2nd Leg and fully deserved to beat Swindon until the defensive error that allowed Danny Ward to nick a goal.
The penalties were brilliant as unfancied players like Amankwaah and Darby put their efforts away. The reaction of fans afterwards made anyone who wasn't there (like me) so envious!
THE LOWS
Wembley 2010
I don't think we're the only set of supporters who have gone to Wembley and left sad and disillusioned. Town wearing white didn't help!
Nobody could argue that Millwall deserved to win on the day. In fairness they didn't have to do that much. Charlie Austin had Town's only major chance but he didn't anticipate that freak bobble and the rest was history.
Tonkings
When Danny Wilson got things right, he did it quietly and efficiently. However, when he got it wrong it resulted in some heavy losses.
Bristol Rovers winning 4-0 at the County Ground probably hurt the most.
Losing Billy Paynter & Gordon Greer
Perhaps losing them wasn't the worst thing? Without doubt the clubs inability to REPLACE them has caused Swindon all sorts of problems on the pitch.
I think like all fans we are too fickle. We forget the good stuff whenever a pinch of the bad stuff arrives.
To be honest I do suscribe to the idea that Swindon Town overachieved last season but that wasn't a fluke, it was because Danny Wilson made the calls and it worked.
Now we're stuttering and people are calling for his head! Why?
