STFC: Chairman Quits
Swindon Town have confirmed that Andrew Fitton has stepped down as chairman of the club with immediate effect.
Local businessman Fitton emerged after the collapse of the BEST holdings takeover in 2007.
For a while it looked like Fitton's Swindon football holdings consortium would pull-out of negotiations but eventually completed a deal after protracted talks.
Fitton's goal was to make Swindon Town a Championship within 3-5 years.
After losing Paul Sturrock early on, Fitton appointed Maurice Malpas. It was a deal which would prove unsuccessful but an appointment that Fitton would stand-by and still does.
Danny Wilson replaced him and saved Town from relegation in 2009 and guided Town to the brink of the Championship in 2010.
2010/11 was a spectacular failure and Fitton was forced to look once more as Town were faced with relegation.
Paul Hart was brought in but offered little in the form of change of fortunes.
After relegation was confirmed, Fitton stood down.
Fitton's era has negatives, plenty. However, it should be never underestimated what he has done behind-the-scenes at Swindon Town.
Swindon Football Holdings saved our football club and Fitton played a huge part in that.
