Surely Burley!

Surely Burley!

Former Premier League Manager of the Year, George Burley, has emerged as one of the frontrunners for the Swindon Town job.

The former Scotland coach has been out of the job since January 2011 after a poor tenure as manager of Crystal Palace.

Burley is best remembered for his eight years as manager of Ipswich Town. He took them to the Premier League and within a year to a 5th place top flight finish that resulted in qualification into the UEFA cup.

Prior to Ipswich, Burley managed Ayr United and briefly Colchester United. The rest of his managerial career has been spent with Derby County, Hearts, Southampton, Scotland and Crystal Palace.

As a player, the Scotsman played 11 times for his country and represented them at the 1982 World Cup Finals. He also played close to 400 league games for Ipswich Town picking up an F.A. Cup and UEFA Cup winners medal under Bobby Robson's glory era at Portman Road.

Burley played at the County Ground just once in a competitive fixture and that was while playing for Sunderland in the Milk Cup. He was on the losing side as Town recorded a 3-1 win (after extra time) thanks to goals from Andy Rowland and Brian Wade (2)
