'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Di Canio Slams Phil Smith

Swindon Town boss Paolo Di Canio has hit back at goalkeeper Phil Smith who was released a the end of the season.

Smith had voiced his disappointment at being told of his release by interim chairman Jeremy Wray and not Paolo Di Canio himself.

Di Canio has said that Smith was out to tarnish his name and hit back in today's Swindon Advertiser.

Di Canio was quoted as saying, "I can`t forget that some members that were a part of my team said, in my opinion, stupid things - especially without having the courage - to leave his opinion on Twitter.

"It sends a negative message about myself, about the situation, because it is obvious that he is a selfish footballer. He thinks about himself and puts me in a bad situation.

Smith was released after six seasons at Swindon Town following Town's promotion back to League One.
