2011/12 SWINDON TOWN REPORT CARD: Strikers

2011/12 SWINDON TOWN REPORT CARD: Strikers

Vital Swindon Town grades our strikers for the 2011/12 season.

Jordan Pavvett - F

Won the 2010/11 Samsung win a contract but failed to make one first team appearance. Spent most his time on Twitter and never forced his way into Paolo Di Canio`s thoughts. Was released when his contract expired in January.

Alan Connell - B+

A similar player to fan favourite Lee Peacock, worked hard and ran around a lot and scored vital goals when needed, was in and out of the team and fans backed Connell with fans even turning on Di Canio when Connell was substituted.

Leon Clarke - F

Long time Di Canio target finally signed for the team following the Dagenham away loss and made his debut at Bristol City in the Carling Cup. Was the big physical presence the team needed. Massive chip on his shoulder and Town had been warned about his attitude. Had a very public falling out with Paolo Di Canio following Town`s loss to Southampton in the Carling Cup. Went on loan to Chesterfield where he scored for fun before eventually returning to Swindon only to be sent to Charlton as exchange for Paul Benson. Clarke would fail to do anything at Charlton and was eventually shipped to Crawley Town. Poor attitude with a massive chip on his shoulder. Could have been great, but blew it.

Paul Benson - B+

Totally different player to Clarke, great attitude and played the game with passion, scored many crucial goals for Town and ever present in the box. A veteran striker who scored for fun at this level crucial during the run in!

Raffaele De Vita - B-

Arrived from Livingston in the Summer and we were sceptical how he would get on. Didn`t do a lot up front but was moved to the wing part way through the season where he flourished.

Jonathan Tehoue - F

Arrived on loan from Leyton Orient to be a physical presence up front. He had that presence but constantly looked lost and didn`t know here to be. Was eventually dropped by Di Canio after only 3 games with Paolo stating he was no better than what he already had at the club and that he couldn`t see him playing for Swindon again. After the season Tehoue`s representatives blamed Di Canio saying the Italian manager had used racial language to Tehoue`s team mates and that he was dropped unfairly. Town would dispute Tehoue`s claims saying they investigated a repot of racism and that Tehoue was dropped purely based on his performance on the pitch and the fact he refused to take part in training. The FA is currently investigating Tehoue`s claims.

Miles Storey - N/A

Made 5 appearances for Town this season but was raw. Signed his first professional contract at the end of the season.

Lukas Magera - D

Should have been a key signing, a full Czech International plying their trade at the County Ground. Struggled to adjust to the League Two game, got pushed off the ball, often looked slow as he was used to playing the ball at his feet. Showed flashes of brilliance against teams in higher divisions suggesting that League Two was too physical for him. Was sent out on loan back to native Czechoslovakia towards the end of the season. Is contracted for another season and wants to prove himself to Paolo Di Canio and Swindon Town fans.

Billy Bodin - B-

Played well and got stuck in, was Di Canio`s first choice striker, missed 2 games at the beginning of the season and was strangely sent on loan to Torquay United, The move apparently had been requested by Bodin himself. Performed well at Plainmoor and returned in January and went right back into the Swindon Town squad. Scored some cracking goals for Town then went back out on loan to promotion rivals Crewe. Was given a full Welsh International callup but declined it to play at Wembley with Crewe. He wouldn`t get onto the pitch that match. Has been offered 2 year contract but will only accept if he gets first team football something Di Canio refuses to promise any player.

Jake Jervis - B

Arrived on loan from Championship side Birmingham City, scored a couple of crucial goals for Swindon. Di Canio wanted to extend his loan period but Birmingham who had been watching the striker decided he was to try himself at a higher level and went on loan to Preston North End for the rest of the season. Has recently been awarded a new one year deal at Birmingham City following his success at Swindon and Preston.

Cristian Montano - C

Highly rated West Ham striker came in on loan after West Ham cut off his loan deal at Notts County. Scored a couple of goals at Town then seemingly fell out of favour and returned to West Ham. Would have loan spells at Dagenham and Oxford after his stint at Swindon.

Ronan Murray - C

Highly rated Ipswich Town striker came in with great expectations. Murray was Ipswich reserves top goal scorer. Scored a few goals for Town but seemed very very lightweight. Di Canio attempted to sign Murray to a permanent contract but Murray turned this down and extended his Ipswich contract but returned to Swindon Town on loan. Was used quite a lot by Di Canio who rated the Irish Man, got in some decent positions but was pushed off the ball a lot due to his light frame.

Mehdi Kerrouche - C

This grade should be higher but it appears that Kerrouche was his own worst enemy. Started as Town`s top goal scorer, slamming home memorable goals against Crawley Town and Rotherham and fans soon began chanting "Kerrouche is on fire", Dropped out of the team in December following the Bristol Rovers away match. Di Canio stated that Kerrouche had bad discipline with training and that he was free to leave the club despite being top goal scorer, Went to local rivals Oxford United and did nothing. Kerrouche disappeared until the Port Vale match where he was on hand to celebrate winning the League Two title. Kerrouche was a key ingredient in winning that title a the start of the season.
