Swindon Stadium Redevelopment To Start In 2013?

Swindon Town Football Club and Swindon Borough Council have confirmed plans that the club are to push ahead with redevelopment plans for the County Ground.

Town are hoping to knock down the Town End Stand and replace it with a modern two tiered structure complete with conferencing facilities, private boxes looking onto the pitch and a hotel on the back of it to create much needed non-matchday revenue.

Swindon Borough Council appear to be behind the development and will give Town a 250 year lease to the site should the plans come to fruition.

Let`s hope these plans finally get off the ground. We have had too many false dawns regarding a new stadium. Nearly half of the clubs across the country ply their trade in new or redeveloped stadia.

Due to previous mis-management of the club we have seen many ideas come to light such as the Shaw Tip plans, plans to rotate the pitch under Dunwoody and the Diamandis regime, however they expected the council to pick up the tab along with dodgy property dealings.

Many have stated they will miss the Town End as it is, but lets be honest its dilapidated and is in serious need of repair. With new facilities we may even get a pint at half time? One things for sure though , if Swindon Town are to become self sufficient and are serious about pushing forward to the Championship or above, we need a stadium of a higher standard to achieve these aims in today`s money driven footballing world.
