Phil Smith Training With Portsmouth

Former Swindon Town goalkeeper Phil Smith has been training with League One side Portsmouth he has revealed.

Smith who was Town`s longest serving player up until the end of last season was released by Paolo Di Canio at the end of the season.

With the emergency loan window shut, Pompey are only allowed to sign out of contract players so they have looked at Smith who was set to retire from the game.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Smith said. 'They've been kind enough to have me in,'

Smith has yet to sign a contract with the financially stricken side but is keen to get back into the game after looking after his family whilst his wife has been at work.

'I'm training again on Thursday and that's as far as I know, it's a day-by-day thing. I'm just going to keep going in and keep going back when I'm invited and see if anything comes of it.

'Fitness is the sort of thing they are looking at. I haven't played since the end of last season and I feel pretty good in myself and feel like I've got something to offer.'

Smith revealed he was set to call time on his football career and had been looking at employment outside of football since failing to win a contract with Southend United or Cheltenham Town in the Summer following a trial at both clubs.
