SPECIAL: The Next Swindon Manager

SPECIAL: The Next Swindon Manager

Well Paul Sturrock is gone and now the best thing to do is look to the future. Who will be named Swindon Town manager? Vital Swindon Town looks at the possibilities.

Steve McClaren
Yes we all will laugh at this suggestion. McClaren was mentioned in the Swindon Advertiser as a possible successor howevr we couldn`t afford him. If he did come to Swindon though it would help make amends to english football by starting near the bottom.

Martin Allen
Has a love-hate relationship with Town fans. Swindon Town fans cannot stand "mad dog". Would he be a popular choice? The fan base would likely be split. He seems to know how to get teams to the playoffs but promotion seems a step too far for Allen. Allen has managed at Barnet, Brentford, MK Dons and for about ten minutes at Leicester City earlier this season.

Graham Rix
Yes that same Graham Rix who managed at Oxford, Portsmouth and was caretaker at Chelsea previously. Rix applied for the job last time however was not considered. Would be a cheap option but no experience at this level and a poor record as a manager would go against him.

Shaun Taylor
Has made it known that he would like to become a manager. Is a firm favourite with the fans and has held coaching positions at Forest Green Rovers and Bristol City after retiring as a player in 1998.

David Byrne
The current caretaker has ruled himself out of the job and aims to return to the youth ranks once a new manager is put in place.

Paul Bodin
Bodin is a Swindon Town legend having had 2 spells at the club before. Scored the penatly to take Swindon Town to the Premier League. Is currently a coach within Swindon Town`s youth set up.

Lou Macari
Macari is a Swindon Town legend, personally it would be a mistake for Macari to come back. Like Jim Smith at Oxford his second coming may not go as planned and could ruin his legendary status at the County Ground.

Colin Calderwood
Another name always mentioned whenever Town`s managerial position is available. Forest are second in League One right now and Town would have to pay a hefty fee to sign Calderwood. Can`t see this happening….. yet.

Glenn Hoddle
Is available and looking to get back into football. Would he be willing to come back to his first managerial job though? Hoddle would likely want big wages and money to spend and that just isn`t going to happen at Swindon Town.

Martin Ling
Ling is another County Ground legend and has previously stated he would want to manage Swindon Town. Ling was linked with the post prior to Sturrock`s arrival. Again Town would have to pay a fee to Leyton Orient which they likely couldn`t afford. Also with Orient top of League One is Ling going to take a step back?

Steve Cotterill
Swindon Town fans top choice for the job right now. One of the best young managers in the game right now and he is available for nothing. Town would be stupid not to try and lure Cotterill to the County Ground. Cotterill has had fantastic success at Cheltenham as well as moderate success at Burnley. An added bonus is that Cotterill has worked with a limited budget.

Andy King
Probably taking a step back by going back to Andy King, however he is loyal and would be used to working under financial constraints.

Steve White
The former manager of Chippenham Town was keen for the job last time and was dead set on the fact he could bring the glory days back to Swindon Town. Has a good scouting knowledge after working at Southampton for several years.

Luc Nijholt
Another top choice by Swindon Town fans. He was a fans favourite when he was at the County Ground when Town were in the Premier League. Nijholt is currently head coach of Stormvogels Telstar but has made it known he wants to manage in Britain having previously applied for the Town job last year as well as applying for the Motherwell job.

Lets have a former player. Alot could depend on if the takeover goes through and how persuasive Fitton can be to prospective managers.
