It's been a decent start to the campaign thus far for Swindon Town. However, on Boxing Day Danny Wilson's squad face possibly their toughest fixture to date. An away trip to Phil Parkinson's Addicks.
'We're going there to get a win' said Danny Wilson when discussing the Charlton fixture on the official Swindon Town website. He continued by saying that We're not going there to put on a good showing, take the plaudits of being a good football team and lose the game.
Wilson did recognise Charlton's strength by noting that the Londoners have 'Premiership players' in certain areas.
Lloyd Sam is suspended for the tie so he will be replaced by either by Therry Racon or their highly rated youngster Jonjo Shelvey
Meanwhile former Leeds United skipper Frazer Richardson could return but Reading loanee Dave Mooney misses out through injury.
Side that draw 4-4 with Millwall on 19/12/09
Scott Wagstaff (Leon McKenzie 83')
Lloyd Sam (Matt Spring 89')
Dave Mooney (Akpo Sodje 66')
Darren Randolph (GK)
Miguel Ángel Llera
Dean Sinclair (on loan at Barnet)
Yassin Moutaouakil (on loan at Motherwell)
Stuart Fleetwood (on loan at Exeter)
The 33 year old Jamaican international is enjoying something of a renaissance at The Valley. He's scored 12 times in the league so far this season including a brace in the 4-4 draw with Millwall last week.
Many will recall that Burton spent a month on loan at the County Ground six years ago in 2003. Burton played four games scoring his one and only goal against Wycombe Wanderers during his final appearance.
Kevin Amankwaah's fitness is Danny Wilson's only major concern going into the fixture. Amankwaah was injured in the first half of Town's 2-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on December 19.
His replacement that day Lescinel Jean-Francois will be on stand-by.
This is a massive test for the so far impressive Austin. He's been the stand-out player of the last month due to his ability to find himself in the right place at the right time but he has also forged a good understanding with strike partner Billy Paynter (who has thrived alongside Austin) and the midfielders.
Swindon Town and Charlton Athletic have only met eachother 53 times in all competitions. The Addicks' record is far superior beating Swindon 25 times to The Robins' 12 wins - there have been 16 draws.
Last Meeting - STFC 0-2 CAFC
14/08/07 - Carling Cup First Round
League One Swindon were given a home tie against then Premier League outfit Charlton.
Swindon held the superior opposition for 52 minutes when Darren Ambrose put Charlton ahead before an Andy Reid penalty sealed the win 11 minutes later.
STFC: Peter Brezovan, Ben Tozer, Hasney Aljofree, Jerel Ifil, Jack Smith, Miguel Comminges (Sofiane Zaaboub (59'), Steve Adams, Craig Easton, Christian Roberts (Michael Pook (59'), Lee Peacock, Blair Sturrock (Ibón Pérez Arrieta).
SNU: Jamie Vincent, Phil Smith.
CAFC: Nicky Weaver, Yassin Moutaouakil, Chris Powell, Madjid Bougherra, Jose Semedo, Andy Reid (Dean Sinclair 79'), Darren Ambrose, Lloyd Sam, Jon Fortune, Marcus Bent (Chris Iwelumo (78'), Izale McLeod (Chris Dickson 82').
SNU: Paddy McCarthy, Darren Randolph.
Charlton Athletic 0-1 Swindon Town
March 11 2000 - Nationwide League Division One.
A bizarre victory really because Charlton were flying high while Swindon were doomed. A Dean Kiely own goal after only 5 minutes was enough to give Swindon an unlikely 3 points.
CAFC: Dean Kiely, Anthony Barness, Chris Powell (John Salako 67'), Richard Rufus, Steve Brown, Graham Stuart, Shaun Newton, Mark Kinsella, John Robinson, Andy Hunt (Martin Pringle 73'), Mathias Svensson
SNU: Carl Tiler, Paul Konchesky, Simon Royce.
STFC: Frank Talia, Mark Robinson, Alan Reeves, Adam Willis, James Williams, Scott Leitch, Lee Collins, Andy Williams (Gareth Hall 67'), Wayne Gray (Charlie Griffin 81' (Philippe Cuervo 89')), Chris Hay, Steve Cowe.
SNU: Paul McAreavey, Steve Mildenhall.
Played for both clubs
A Swindon Town legend. 'Chalky' White played over 300 times in all competitions for the Robins scoring 111 goals (the last Town player to reach 100) between 1986 and 1994. Before his Town career White spent a year with Charlton Athletic between 1982-1983 where he scored 12 goals in 29 league appearances.
Another Town favourite. The Geordie striker was signed by Danny Williams after the League Cup success of 1969 for a then club record fee of £17,500.
Horsfield was influential as Town won the Anglo-Italian League Cup Winners Cup against Roma and the Anglo-Italian Cup Final versus Napoli. 'King' Arthur also scored a brace in the 4-0 win over Juventus during the qualifying stages.
Horsfield departed Wiltshire for Charlton Athletic in 1972 where he played 139 times and scored 53 times.
Another Town legend. Smart scored Town's first in the League Cup Final win over Arsenal in 1969.
A local favourite, Smart was a professional with his hometown club between 1960 and 1973 playing over 400 times in all competitions scoring 60 times.
Smart joined Charlton in 1973 and featured for the Addicks 30 times scoring once.
Others to have played for both clubs include Deon Burton, Hameur Bouazza, Carl Tiler, Garry Nelson, Ray Treacy and Andy Todd among others.
P Miller (Hertfordshire)
Mr. Miller has officiated 8 fixtures this season and has booked 29 players sending one off (Yeovil's Jean-Paul Kalala).
His last Town fixture was the 1-1 draw at Millwall last season where a 43rd minute goal by Billy Paynter was cancelled out by a James Henry wonder-goal in injury time.
Sadly I cannot see Town getting anything from this. Charlton Athletic 2-0 Swindon Town PROVE ME WRONG
Swindon Town take on Yeovil at the County Ground on December 28. KO 1500
