County Ground, Swindon
Saturday 18 August 2007
3pm Kick Off
Swindon Town welcome Luton Town to the County Ground this Saturday as they get ready for their first League One home game this season.
Town fans were hoping to see the return of Super Sammy Parkin however he will not play during this match. Please see below for more details.
Luton were relegated last season from the Championship and are one of the favourites for an immediate return to the second tier of the English game.
'This weekend will be a very difficult game for us and I will be asking my players to be very positive in their approach. It's a fine line between winning and losing and we will have to be very tuned in to scoring a goal and that requires concentration for the whole 90 minutes.'
Swindon Town manager Paul Sturrock
'Sam is bitterly disappointed, because it looked as if he would be getting fit, and with Swindon on the horizon, he has gone back to square one slightly. However the prognosis is that it should be two to three weeks.'
Luton Town Manager Kevin Blackwell
Manager Paul Sturrock will have a headache choosing who will play in goal after fine performances from both Phil Smith against Northampton and Peter Brezovan against Charlton. Town will have to fight hard and we could see a starting debut for Ibon Arrieta who will hope to end Swindon's goal draught. Ady Williams and Barry Corr are both still injured.
Swindon Town are not going to score many goals, fans are already aware of that. Town will have to shut down the Luton front men if they are to have any chance of getting anything from this match.
Sam Parkin who was hoping to make his long awaited return to the County Ground will not feature after going off in Luton's 2-1 win over Dagenham and Redbridge earlier in the week. Kevin Foley was sold on Tuesday to Championship side Wolverhampton. Richard Jackson signed a 2 year contract Wednesday after joining the club from Derby County. Former Town star Sol Davis may be available for this match.
The powerful striker was one of manager Kevin Blackwell's first signings for the club. Furlong was known for his impressive goalscoring record at QPR and will be looking to add to that tally on Saturday.
Swindon have a moderate success rate against The Hatters. Swindon have a 33-21-46 record against Luton in all competitions. The last time the 2 teams played Swindon lost 3-1 on Saturday 12th March 2005 with a goal from on loan striker Michael Proctor. Peter Holmes, Kevin Nicholls and Ahmet Brkovic scored the goals for Luton. Luton would be promoted to the Championship at the end of this season.
This is going to be a very difficult game for Swindon but thankfully it is a bit easier thanks to the injury to Sam Parkin. Old players who come back are bound to score against their former club and with our lack of goals we cannot afford that. Luton are one of the favourites for promotion this season just being relegated from the Championship. Adding these 2 factors together I would be happy with a draw but hand on heart says this will end 1-2.
