Wrexham 2 - Swindon Town 1

Racecourse, Wrexham

Saturday 9 September 2006

Attendance: 5,257 (717 Swindon)

Wrexham 2, Swindon Town 1

Swindon Town suffer their first defeat of the season to Wrexham but still find themselves top of the League 2 table.

Wrexham ended Swindon's winning run at 6 games after a poor second half ensured defeat at the racecourse this afternoon.

Town got off to a flying start and looked the better side the first half. Paul Evans scored a fantastic goal with a 35 yard free kick hitting the back of the net.

Town looked to have taken a 2-0 lead heading into the break however Christian Roberts was ruled off side meaning the score was 1-0 to the visitors going into half time.

Wrexham came out the second half the better side. Swindon keeper Peter Brezovan made a rare error and fouled Wrexham's Chris Llewellyn inside the box to give the home side a penalty that was slotted home by Ryan Valentine.

Less that 2 minutes later Brezovan mis-judged a ball and Mark Jones drilled home the winner on 68 Minutes.

Paul Ince made his Swindon debut but did not do much to add to the side. Was vocal and had one attempt at goal but did not appear match fit.

Royce Brownlie saw a late chance fly over the goal.

With results going the right way, Swindon Town still sit at the top of League 2, 1 point above Lincoln City, however the big test will be Tuesday night at the County Ground against the MK Dons.

Star Player

Paul Evans - Fantastic free kick gave Town a lift. Could be signing of the season.

Player Ratings

Peter Brezovan - 5

So Brezovan is human after all. He didn't save a penalty and allowed one goal. It appeared his confidence suffered after allowing the penalty.

Jack Smith - 6

Was ok at the back. Missed Jerel Ifil, however done his job well.

Andy Nicholas - 5

Cleared the ball well however holding onto the ball appeared to be a problem at times.

Ady Williams - 6

Made his return after injury and looked good. Was vocal at the back and was a decent replacement for Ifil.

Charlie Comyn-Platt - 6

Done well to get the ball forward. Hopefully will see more playing time.

Curtis Weston - 6

Held his own, Done as well as he could, however with the strikers being below par today his efforts seemed to be wasted.

Ricky Shakes - 6

The pacy shakes again flew down the wings, Put in some decent crosses.

Aaron Brown - 5

Did well to get the ball forward. Looks like a new player after retracting his transfer request.

* Paul Evans - 7

Couldn't do much more. Fantastic free kick. Replaces Grant Smith in the scoring midfielder role.

Christian Roberts - 6

Had a goal dis-allowed and was pacy. Should have passed the ball back instead of going for glory when the goal was empty.

Lee Peacock - 5

Got stuck in but a very quiet game from Peacock.

Manager Rating

Dennis Wise 6 - Bringing on an unfit Paul Ince may not have been the best idea, however Wise did put together a pretty solid defence given the fact Jerel Ifil was suspended. Ifil was missed however not as bad as most expected. Wise was right to bring on Andy Caton who has been off to a great start.

Opponent Rating

Denis Smith 8 - Must have said something to inspire his team at half time. Swindon were the better team in the first half however the Wrexham team fought back and deserved the win after a good second half.
