Swindon Town suffer heartbreak in the 93rd minute as Mark Gower's late goal gives Southend a 2-1 over Swindon Town at Roots Hall this afternoon.
Town named 4 changes going into the game. Billy Paynter was dropped in favour of Kaid Mohamed. Chris Allen starts for Town along with Blair Sturrock and Chris Blackburn.
Town got off to the best start possible by taking a 1-0 lead on the second minute thanks to a Simon Cox goal.
Town almost took a 2-0 lead thanks to Simon Cox but the goalkeeper did well to put the ball out giving Town a corner.
Leon Clarke almost equalised on the 13th minute as he beat Town keeper Peter Brezovan however the shot hit the crossbar and want onto the roof of the stand.
Dean Morgan again came close for United however his shot hit the roof of the stand, a theme seems to be happening here.
Town would then mount a challenge and Kaid Mohamed would set up Blair Sturrock however Town put the ball out of play.
Southend then had a long period of possession however it was just passing the ball back and forward and failed to mount any real challenge. Southend are looking unsure of themselves and no one looked as if they wanted the ball for United.
Hasney Aljofree would get booked for a rash challenge on Leon Clarke, which left United in a great position to mount a challenge on goal.
Maher would put in the cross and Adam Barrett would slot the ball home to make the match 1-1.
Play would re-start and Leon Clarke put the ball across the face of the goal however no one was there to finish for Southend.
Southend continued to have the better of the play and if it was not for keeper Peter Brezovan, Town would be down by 2 or 3 goals by now.
Kaid Mohamed came close to scoring an own goal but thankfully, Brezovan was there to make the save.
So far Town have had 44% of the possession to Southend's 56%. The Referee indicated there would be 2 minutes added time at the end of first half. The Swindon Town fans have been very vocal so far this match chanting "WE'LL NEVER DIE" and "WE WANT OUR SWINDON BACK" in reference to the off the field problems.
HALF TIME: Southend United 1 - Swindon Town 1
Town came back out for the second half with an unchanged side. Town had the first goal chance of the 2nd half after a terrific run from Simon Cox. Southend's Gary Richards came on for goal scorer Adam Barrett who took ages to leave the pitch.
Mark Gower came close to scoring for Southend however Peter Brezovan was able to keep the ball out of the back of the net.
Southend's Morgan came so very close scoring for Southend.
Blair Sturrock left the pitch to be replaced by former Southend striker Billy Paynter who came into the game to a chorus of boos.
Today's attendance has been announced as 7,403. The Southend radio announcer was qucik to note that Swindon are not a top draw in League One.
Dean Morgan put a good cross into the box however Leon Clarke could not get on the end of it. Southend will be kicking themselvse for missing 2 good, clear chances in the last 5 minutes. You get the feeling that Southend will score in a minute.
Billy Paynter then came close to scoring for Swindon after a thunderous strike.
Leon Clarke ran straight down the channel and passed the ball to Mark Gower and was completely open however he hit the ball just wide of the post. In truth this game should be 3-1 Southend, Town are not attacking at all this half.
Leon Clarke was back in the box after Charlie McDonald came on for Southend and passed the ball straight to Town goalkeeper Peter Brezovan.
Town would bring on Jon-Paul McGovern for Kaid Mohamed who was making his first Football League start for Town.
The conditions on the pitch are poor with the rain pouring down however the wind has subsided somewhat at Roots Hall. Chris Allen take the corner for Swindon Town with only 10 minutes left to go in the match, however Town were not able to score.
The weather has taken a turn for the worse making it near impossible to put a cross into the box. The rain is now belting it down making visability bad.
The referee has indicated there will be a minimum of 3 minutes of stoppage time. Town are having the better of the end of this game, Can Town get a late winner?
Mark Gower scored a late winning goal on the near last kick of the game. Heartbreak for Town. Chris Blackburn to blame for the goal. A terrible turn of events for Town in what could very well be their last ever game.
