'If It's Football, It's Vital'

EDITORS BLOG: Pompey Fans A Credit

Normally I wouldn't write an article about opposition fans but following today's 5-0 win over Pompey, special mention must go to the travelling Portsmouth fans who made the trip to the County Ground today.

1,504 Pompey fans made the pilgrimage to Swindon to watch their team take a 5-0 beating but to them, it didn't matter.

Their club, like Swindon Town have been through the mire, rubbish ownership and no money and came within days of liquidation, in fact they aren't out of the woods yet.

Many fans would march out being down 3-0 but the majority stayed and just had fun.

They know they are certain to play League Two Football next season, should they still be in existence.

Ok, whilst not mathematically certain, and Pompey are only just in the League One relegation places but they will get a 10 point deduction when they finally exit administration which will take them to the bottom of the pile.

Whilst Town fans mocked their Hampshire counterparts with chants of 'Going Down', Pompey fans responded with humorous chants of "We lose every week, We lose every week....you're nothing special.....We lose every week!"

Towards the end of the game you could be mistaken for thinking Southampton had been relegated from the Premier League as wild cheering erupted from the Portsmouth fans.

Late in the game the fans chanted 'lets pretend we scored a goal', and all enjoyed a wild celebration.

Such was the class of the Portsmouth fans, even Town boss Paolo Di Canio clapped them at the end of the game.

Whilst we are enjoying the good times right now, it was great to see a club, although in the brown stuff, still able to enjoy themselves and be proud of the effort the players are making despite getting thumped week in and week out.

We look forward to the next time our paths cross.

As our sister site Vital Pompey would say, 'PLAY UP POMPEY!' and lets hope the fans do gain proper ownership of the club, they deserve it.

Thanks for the write up. Comes to something when the fans are the only decent thing about Pompey worth writing about! A west end critic would be scrabbling about if he/she wrote how well behaved the audience was! But then the stuff off the pitch has dominated for so long, what goes on on the pitch seldom matters! Good luck Swindon. PDC = legend!
