VITAL SWINDON HALL OF SHAME: Tony Thorpe

When Sam Parkin was sold to Ipswich after Town failed to make the League One playoffs, Swindon Town recruited due Tony Thorpe and Jamie Cureton to replace his goals. Whilst Cureton finally found his scoring boots after a loan spell at Colchester United. Tony Thorpe was a complete let down.

Thrope had a decent career at Luton Town, Bristol City and QPR before arriving at the County Ground and between him and Cureton were expected to push Town towards the top of the table despite Parkin`s departure.

Thorpe would start opening day of the 2005/06 season alongside Cureton and miss a sitter at Barnsley which was a sign to come. Thorpe continued to look clueless and slow for the most part and would be sent to play for the reserves, Rumours surfaced that Thorpe was angry at the notion of playing in the reserves and this was confirmed by then manager Andy King who said the pair had a row over Thorpe`s demotion, however things looked to be on the way up when Thorpe would score a hat trick for the reserves against AFC Bournemouth. Following this Thorpe was re-called and missed a penalty in his next match.

Andy King would be sacked and replaced by Iffy Onuora who decided after a defeat at MK Dons to not play Thorpe in a league match again.

Rumours surfaced that Thorpe would be leaving the club but a shortage of strikers in an FA Cup match against Boston United meant Thorpe got a re-call and a chance to make amends. Thorpe would be replaced on 64 minutes after failing to make an impression and replaced by Ashan Holgate.

Thorpe would never play for Town again and was released shortly thereafter. Thorpe would go on to join Colchester United like fellow stiker Jamie Cureton hoping for the same success but the success never came. Tony Thorpe never found his scoring boots again and toiled around non-league and Grimsby Town as his career fizzled out.

Tony Thorpe will go down as one of those players where so much was expected by very little actually happened.
